Beyond The Call Of Duty

Editor's Note: A special note of appreciation is given to Mr. Ken Kooi and the volunteer members of the "Medal of Honor Historical Society"(MoHHS). Their assistance in locating and obtaining photographs of T-5 Peden's final resting place is deeply appreciated. This small group searches the remote, lonely cemeteries of America, locating, identifying and ensuring CMOH recipients are properly recognized. Thank you, MoHHS, for going "above and beyond the call...."

Beyond the Call of Duty

The standard account of supererogation holds that Liv is not morally required to jump on a grenade, thereby sacrificing her life, to save the lives of five soldiers. Many proponents defend the standard account by appealing to moral rationalism about requirement. These same proponents hold that Bernie is morally permitted to jump on a grenade, thereby sacrificing his life, to spare someone a mild burn. I argue that this position is unstable, at least as moral rationalism is ordinarily defended. The proponent of the standard account of supererogation must either reject moral rationalism or endorse that Bernie is morally required to remain in safety. Along the way, this paper brings together three neglected topics: going *too far* beyond the call of duty, moral rationalism about *permission*, and how to weigh reasons when some reasons have a different proportion of justifying and requiring weight than others.

After a fatal spring break collision left a pit bull scared and alone, Sgt. Jonathan Whaley felt it was his personal duty to reunite the dog with the surviving members of its family to lift their spirits.

On the night of October 3, 2020, Bottineau Station Resident Border Patrol Agent (BPA) Robert Holmes assisted law enforcement with a 911 call regarding a suicidal individual. The individual was threatening to jump from the top of a 144-foot-tall grain elevator.

Upon arrival, the law enforcement officers on scene expressed a significant fear of heights. BPA Holmes volunteered to ride the elevator up the structure without backup to search for the individual. BPA Holmes acted beyond the call of duty and at great personal risk; he was neither trained nor equipped for this type of encounter.

A surprisingly large number of people have denied that it is possible for human moral agents to act in such a way as to go beyond or transcend what moral duty or obligation requires of them. Some of this opposition to the possibility of supererogation, as it is called, has been motivated by theological concerns. This book surveys the concerns of Luther, Calvin, and Melanchthon, as they react to certain teachings of the Roman Catholic Church, as well as the concerns of several contemporary theologians. It also examines some contemporary philosophers whose concerns have grown out of a commitment to a Kantian, utilitarian, or prescriptive type of ethics and urges that there are valuable lessons to be learned from these theologians and philosophers. At the same time it is argued that some of their concerns are the result of a mistaken idea of what it means to perform an act of supererogation. In addition, it is argued that some of their concerns can be addressed in ways that do not require a denial of the possibility of going beyond the call of duty in human life. This stage of the argument involves a discussion of virtue ethics and an examination of the concept of vocation, particularly as it has developed in Protestant thought, and illustrates the relevance of virtue and vocation to the problem of supererogation.

Working with victims and survivors of human trafficking has always been fulfilling to Amina, especially once victims have been assisted to return home. This, however, calls for a collaborative effort with several actors.

The Medal of Honor is the highest military decoration that may be awarded by the United States government. It is presented by the President of the United States, in the name of Congress, and is conferred only upon members of the United States Armed Forces who distinguish themselves through conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty:

A moment is defined as a very brief period of time, and in law enforcement, a lot can happen in those delicate seconds. Most of us know an officer that has gone above and beyond the call of duty. Whether an act of heroism, supporting a community member, responding to a distraught call, or protecting those who cannot protect themselves, we know who to count on to answer our call.

Approximately 4.7 million Veterans live in rural areas and face challenges receiving support and care for complex service-connected healthcare needs. The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to explore nurses' experiences caring for Veterans in rural home care/hospice settings. Semistructured interviews (N = 14) were conducted between August 2020 and March 2021. Content and thematic analysis resulted in three central themes: Mission readiness: Ensuring safe home environments, Partnering with Veterans: Knowing when to lead and when to follow, and It's my duty: Caring with purpose and honor. Study findings highlight the need for cultural competence in both rural and Veteran cultures. Implications for practice reinforce currently emerging national priorities, including personal safety considerations and need for further professional development associated with screening for firearms and gun safety. Other implications for home care/hospice agencies, as well as nursing education, are discussed.

"Our goal is to really honor all 146, remind the departments that you're not alone, remind the families that you're not alone," Jagrut Shah said. This traveling mural is part of an initiative by a group called Beyond the Call of Duty, who are administering this end of watch tour."Bring that love back out," Shah said.Since the pandemic forced many police departments to cancel their trip to Washington DC for National Police Week, this chance to gather and reflect has been brought to them. The tour also made a stop yesterday in Racine in memory of police officer John Hetland, who also died in the line of duty in 2019.

The Vermont Workforce Development Board advises the governor and commissioner of labor on the development and implementation of a comprehensive, coordinated and responsive workforce education and training system. A core duty requires the board to gather feedback and information about the education and training needs of employers, workers and job seekers statewide. In 2018, H. 919 directed the board to collaborate with state agencies to align, coordinate and engage workforce stakeholders. This collaboration resulted in an implementation plan incorporating key stakeholders in workforce activities across the state.

Through the efforts outlined here, states are not only meeting federal mandates under WIOA, but also adapting initiatives and outreach to best meet the economic development demands in their state. It proves economically advantageous for workforce boards to expand their purview to include coordinating statewide initiatives, incorporating data into future workforce planning and aligning key stakeholders behind multiple state-level goals.
